Russian roulette, dicing with death- just two phrases that have their origin on the roulette table. It is a total game of chance, nail-biting, addictive, and probably one of the most accessible and fun casino games that you could ever play. It is easy to see why online gambling sites have created their own online versions of it to keep players entertained wherever they are and whatever they are doing. Roulette traces its roots back to the 18th century in France although a similar, albeit, somewhat primitive version of the game did exist in the 17th century. It started in Paris and a description of the game can be found in a novella called “La Roulete, ou le Jour” by writer Jaques Lablee and refers to a roulette wheel in the famous Palais Royal. By 1886 it had spread to America where it consisted of numbers 1-28 as well as a single 0 and a double 0, and an American Eagle although this soon vanished and was replaced with numbers only.
During the 19th century, its popularity spread through America and Europe and it soon became the most popular game in Monte Carlo- the gaming mecca of the European continent during the abolition of gambling. During this time, the game was linked to the devil as all of the numbers on the wheel add up to 666.
Nowadays, players have a variety of options when it comes to placing bets. They can bet directly on the number they think the ball will land on, the colour, whether the number is odd or even, or a range of numbers which is called an “outside bet”. The fun and excitement of the game comes from the fact that there is so much chance involved. You literally cannot predict the outcome (unless you are a mega-brainy scientist using the chaos theory) and you cannot use any mathematical methods to predict the outcome- making it purely a game of chance.
One of the craziest roulette bets was placed in 2004 by a man called Ashely Revell in London. He sold everything he owned including his clothes and small possessions and bet his net assets of $135,300 on red at the Plaza Hotel in Las Vegas. He was lucky enough to win and he walked away with a cool $270,600.
Roulette makes an appearance in many films, books, and even songs- the most recent being Russian Roulette by singer Rhianna. There is no doubt that it is one of, if not the most fun and exciting casino game out there. If you have not yet take a spin of the roulette wheel, we suggest you try it out at the earliest opportunity! You never know, lady luck could be on your side.
